Driving a big SUV around the Ha Giang loop winding mountain roads were a challenging but very rewarding experience. it is not for bad drivers getting the bigger issue though, which becomes a much bigger problem to avoid when driving a 4 wheeler and not a scooter.
The route plan itinerary of the northern Vietnam
Hanoi – Ha giang city – Quan Ba town – Yen Minh town – Lung cu flag pole – Dong Van town – Meo Vac – Du Gia = 5 day road trip

4WD SUV customized road route
About the road trip: I was on my way with mostly decent weather, and was absolutely blown away by the beauty of this region even with some fog/haze here and there. The roads were in much better condition than I have been for years.

Food and accommodations were very conveniently available throughout our journey, as we opted mostly for basic motels for ease of access.

Regardless, I also did take the challenge of doing some less travelled routes like DT182, which were quite difficult to drive on but took my breath away every time I saw the landscape around me. Even drove in the dark on some occasions which was also a nice experience with less traffic.

Have lots of mountain driving experience, and I’d definitely recommend trying out the Ha Giang loop with a 4×4 SUV
Road to Cao Bang and Ban Gioc Waterfalls
In addition to doing the Ha Giang loop, I drove from Hanoi to Sapa and then around the Sapa countryside. Also from Ha Giang, I took the northern mountain roads to Cao Bang and Ban Gioc waterfall before returning to Hanoi. My route included the infamous Khau Coc Cha pass (video included of current road conditions) and Na Tenh pass right on the border of China. I also drove around North-Eastern Vietnam up to Lang Son and it had breathtaking views as well.
