Tucked high in Vietnam’s remote northern mountains, close to the Chinese border, the former French military outpost of Sapa offers some of Vietnam’s most colourful experiences. The views are breathtaking. Vietnam’s highest peak, the 3,143-metre Mount Fansipan, looms overhead, while the surrounding valleys feature terraced rice paddies and blazing green fields cut by fast-flowing streams. Layer upon layer of green ridges fade into the distance, edged by sharp, rocky peaks. The region is home to several ethnic minority groups all wearing their traditional and colourful attire. You can get there either by overnight train or car from Hanoi.
Day 1: Hanoi – Sapa (L/D)
Our adventure starts with the drive to the mountain town of Sapa. The journey to Sapa will take the best part of the day. The drive is worthwhile though, as the scenery on your northward journey into the highlands is both dramatic and breathtaking. Arriving in Sapa late in the afternoon, you will check into your hotel. Free. At leisure or short walk around town. This evening you will dine at one of the local restaurants.
Day 2: Cat Cat – Ta Phin Villages – Sapa (B/L/D)
Enjoy breakfast and a new day in the mountain. You will take a walk to Cat Cat village, set in a beautiful valley just outside Sapa – Cat Cat is home to the H’mong people. After lunch in Sapa, you take a drive to Ta Phin valley, home to Black H’mong people and Red Dao people. Dao women are particularly striking as they wear a large red turban often covered with old coins or jewelery. They also shave their hair and eyebrows. Tonight you spend a second night in Sapa town in the foot of Fansipan.
Day 3: Sapa- Ta Van-Lao Chai Hill tribe Villages (B/L/D)
Today you have a full day trek from Sapa town along buffalo paths, trails and through several hill tribe villages. This is an absolutely spectacular walk through stunning scenery inhabited by some of the friendliest people you will meet. You have lunch at restaurant near the river on the way. Rejoin car transfer back to Sapa for overnight.
Day 4: Sapa – Hanoi (B/L)
Bidding farewell to Sapa and its friendly people you begin the journey back to the capital. Some shork breaks on the way before you arrive in Hanoi by late afternoon. End of services. Cam on va chao tam biet!
Option: Bac Ha Sunday hill tribe market.
A visit to the Sunday market is a must. The very colourful flower Hmong people converge from faraway villages to trade and exchange goods here: Local farm produce, Tho cam (indigo clothes) dogs, cats, pigs, horses and more are on sale here. Local people, especially young men and girls wearing their ‘Sunday best’ come from many of the surrounding villages in order to catch up with each other. This is a golden opportunity for any budding photographers as the diversity of colours on display is truly magnificent.
