«We drove West from Hanoi, past rice fields, busy villages and interesting limestone formations and we got progressively higher until we were at the top of a pass in Hoa Binh province overlooking the town of Mai Chau. We picked up a local guide (who turned out to also be one of our hosts) and she took us on a 5 hour walk through the country side and past White and Black Hill Tribe villages. These ethnic groups are minorities in Vietnam and the women of the different ethnic groups wear different coloured bright skirts. It was a pleasant walk and with Phoung translating, we learned about the customs of the local people. We were picked up by our driver at the end of the hike and taken to a Hill Tribe village near Mai Chau where we stayed with a local family in their long house (which was also tall, on stilts). We slept on mats (which we decided were about as comfortable of potato sacks) on the floor of the upper level of the house and ate our meals on the main level while enjoying the beautiful scenery. The house had a pretty pond full of water lilies along one side and looked out over rice fields, just about ready for harvest and a beautiful colour. The ladies of the house cooked us some excellent meals and the older women showed us how they created beautiful scarves on their manual loom. Pam liked the scarves so much she bought 7 (for gifts of course)! The next day we drove to the start of hike number 2 which turned out to be a fantastic hike along a dirt path past the occasional village and surrounded by amazing scenery. A mix of mountains, lush vegetation and green rice paddies. We hiked for most of the day and ended up back at our village after walking through the rice paddies surrounding the village. After a cold beer, a shower and another great meal, even the potato sacks couldn’t keep us awake! The next morning we ate breakfast, enjoyed the morning scenes around the village, said goodbye to our hosts and then loaded up the van to head back to Hanoi. We made one quick stop at a colourful village market and arrived in Hanoi in time for lunch»Request the quotation:in US dollar
